Points, Glitter and filligree

We are entering the festive season and I could not be more excited for all the glitter and crystals these next two month bring! I did a major nail art haul last week, so I am stocked and super pumped!

This design started off as a Gelish gradient, using Inner Vixen and Bronzed. I then pressed a loose glitter mix over the tip. With my White Instant Artist paint I painted in a thin filigree and finished it by gluing small crystals to the end of each curl.

Short points with flowered tips

I am so happy the pointy nails are catching on! I have reshaped more clients over the last 2 months than I ever thought I would! These nails are a great everyday shape! still fashionable but also very functional!

to accent the shape the client wanted the nails painted black with a simple row of daisies on each tip. I love this design! Its so simple which keeps it classy!

Movember

This is the month that I am most grateful not to be a single girl. We are only a week in and already you are seeing the beginnings of sad looking sparse moustaches, and the ones who are able to grow facial hair are a few days away from looking like full out perverts. But Movember is a great cause, and I always support great causes! To help raise awareness and let all the Mo Sisters join in on the fun, I have decided to offer Moustache nail art by donation for the entire month. There is no limit on how much you get!

Ariel Costume

I hope everyone had a great Halloween! October was a crazy month for me, I was consumed by making my Ariel costume and I am finally now recovering from many sleepless nights.

For this post I will be sharing a picture of my nails along with a brief description of how I made my costume

For my mermaid nails I started with Gelish Deep Sea, I then pressed a holographic glitter into the sticky layer left on the cured nails. Next I used an assortment of crystals in different sizes and glued them diagonally along the tips. To finish off the design, I made a few 3D starfish using my acrylic molds from 3D-nails. Once everything was secured I completed the nails with gel top gloss.

After a month of intense labor, I can honestly say that I could not be happier with this costume!

I started off with the shell bra. Luckily I had an old bra that was the perfect color, I cut off the straps and sewed new clear staps on. Next using femo clay, I sculpted the shells to cover the bra cups. This was probably the trickiest part of the costume, especially getting the cooking time correct. Using the same clay in a light pink color I sculpted the starfish hair clip. For the tail I simply pinned some stretchy dance fabric as tightly to my body as possible. Once this incredibly tight skirt was done. I cut off the bottom in a deep V from my knee to lower calf. Along the bottom of the skirt I attached 2 layers of tulle, I used 2 shades cut in 3" wide strips. I used the fabric for the top of the tail as well. The final part of my costume was my Sebastian purse, I think this is my favorite part of the whole costume! For him, I just picked up a stuffed toy from the Disney store, carefully detached the upper half of his shell with a thread picker, then glued gunned some Velcro for a closure. For the strap I braided 3 types of ribbon together one that had leaves and 2 for strength creating a seaweed like swing for him to sit on.

The most exciting part about my costume is that I can now offer a little mermaid upgrade for my princess manicure birthday parties.

Breast Cancer Awareness

The month of October is wrapping up and I cant believe that this is my first Breast Cancer design. the month has just flown by!

This is a really simple manicure but I love the look of it. I started out using Gelish, the base is Taffeta and the french was done using Gossip Girl. Next I painted the ribbon using light pink acrylic paint, I then outlined it with my black soeasy striping paint. To finish it off I glued on some crystals and painted the smile line of each nail with silver glitter

Gelish Gradient with animal print step by step

These days I do a lot of gradient designs, I find its far less obvious for regrowth and the client can get an extra week out their mani. Plus they are super pretty!!

Here is a simple Gelish gradient, you can also do this with polish but you have wait between coats for it to fully dry. I am very impatient so I stick with gel! Other than your polishes all you will need is a eye shadow applicator or makeup sponge. I like those cheap ones that come with eye shadow palettes, the ones with the plastic handle and a tiny sponge on each end. I pick up bags of them from my beauty supply.

Step 1. solid coat of Gelish Light elegance

Step 2. sponge Gelish Sunburst over the tip fading down, you made need a second coat just at the very tip

Step 3. brush on a layer of Gelish June Bride, then thin it out along the cuticle using the other end of the side of the applicator.

Step 4. Using a striping Paint paint in some tiger stripes

Step 5. seal in the design with Gelish Top it Off

True Blood Nails on Nail Pro website

Every time I get any kind if recognition from one of the big nail magazines I'm super pumped! Its so hard to get noticed in this industry full of amazing talent, so I always feel extremely honoured when I get these opportunities. Last week I was asked for permission to use my True Blood nail design for a TV show nail art article on the Nail Pro website, here is the link... http://www.nailpro.com/nail-trends-tv-show-nail-art

Pretty excited about the publicity, unfortunately they posted the wrong Instagram account :( they posted @naileddaily not @jvnaildesign, I'm thinking I probably should change my watermark to prevent these mix ups in the future?

Black and White Floral

This Gelish mani done on one of my girlfriends is probably one of my favourites in awhile! I'm loving the black and white trend that I am seeing a lot of in nail fashion, so when she came to me with this design idea, I was pretty pumped about it.

Using my Gelish polishes, I painted the ring and thumb in a black french, I then painted the white french on the three remaining nails. With my instant artist paints I painted flowers in the opposite colour and then finished off the design with a gold line.

Shark Week

As shark week comes to a wrap, I had to post this fun shark design. I must say I am actually pretty shocked that this is my first time painting sharks. I love them, the very top of my bucket list is to cage dive with a great white, crazy I know! But they are just so awesome, I must see one up close before I die!

I love shark week,  but I think they need to focus a whole lot more on the conservation of sharks rather than the fierce predator. Most of you know I am a huge animal and environmental activist, in my opinion the number one issue in the world is the lack of protection for our oceans. Sharks are the most vital part of our marine ecosystem and if we wipe them out, we are all in very big trouble. In 2012 12 humans were killed by shark attack, where humans killed approx 100 million sharks in that same year. This is an issue that is a huge concern to me, so after the posted pic of my nails I am going to add some additional information on shark conservation, if you are interested please check it out!!

Neon Aztec Stilletos

For today's design I was playing around with a couple of my favorite pink polishes, the colors are China Glaze's You Drive Me Coconuts and OPI's Mod About You. One is a super fun neon and the other is an adorable pastel, I just love the contrast of the two shades.

I started with a diagonal pink tip, next using my SoEasy nail art paints, I painted the black part of the design. For the final step, I painted in a few white highlights and this simple Aztec print was complete

Fourth Of July

Happy Fourth of July to all our neighbors to the south!!!! After spending our country's birthday in the US this design definitely makes me feel a little bit like a sell out. But you got to admit the American flag is pretty fun to work with, I figured if I was going with the red, white and blue I was going to rep it hard. For this design I stuck with the stars and stripes theme and added a majorly blinged out accent nail complete with blue glitter and Swarovski crystals.

I do feel a little guilty walking around with this design, but I'm also not going to lie I also really love these nails!!

Happy Canada Day

Happy Canada Day Everyone!!! I will be honest, I am writing this post from the US...This year I am spending Canada Day in Vegas, it feels kind of wrong but I could not resist a sunny vacation away on this long weekend. Traditionally this day is spent watching the parade and enjoying the local festival, followed by a few tasty beverages and a family BBQ, today my plans are to sit by the pool and fit in a little shopping before I catch my flight, sadly nothing to do with celebrating the birthday of our beautiful country!

But since I am not in town to paint a patriotic design on my own nails, here is one I did on my client last weekend. For this design we had a lot of fun, she wanted to represent with an adorable moose and beaver and the remaining fingers full on Canada... so this is what I came up with.

All these maple leafs bring me back to the 2010 Olympics, they kind of have a hockey feel to them and make me happy reminiscing of that exciting time!

True Blood S6

Today is the season premier of True Blood season  6 and I could not be more excited! For the next 12 weeks I get my favourite vamp back in my life, Eric Northman. Typically I'm not into blondes, but I'll make an exception for Alexander Skarsgard any day! Last year I got great feedback from my true blood nails, so this year I had to go with an even better design.

These nails are done using my water slide decals that I print myself. After going through numerous pics on google and choosing a photo for each nail, I resized the pics to fit and printed them out on water slide decal paper. To apply the decals you simply cut out the shape, place it in water for about 10 seconds, then slide off the backing and apply to your nails. The nails should be painted with white polish before you start.

Nails done, now I just have to patiently wait for the episode....

Orange and Yellow Floral Fade

Today's post is a fun orange fade with some yellow flowers, perfect for this beautifully warm weather we have been having!!.

This design was done on one of my clients using Gelish in Tiger Blossom and some matching loose glitters. To create this fade look I applied the polish using a make up applicator (the double sided kind with the sponge tips) using one end of the applicator I blended the polish down the nail bed keeping it heavier at the tip and feathering it out towards the middle of the nail. Next using the other side of of the applicator I pressed the loose glitter into the polish. The flowers were painted using Orly Instant Artist Sunshine, Crisp White, Chocolate, Hot Green and Solid Gold.

TVD Las Vegas

Just returned home from a fabulous vacation in Las Vegas for the Vampire Diaries Convention. If you know me, you probably know that I am completely obsessed with Ian Somerhalder, and you can imagine how much I enjoyed meeting this beautiful man. I already have customers asking to see the photos so I'll post them after the nail pics....warning!!! you may experience jealousy, he looks exceptionally good!!

For my Vegas nails I wanted to go full glitz, but I also planned to do a little networking while I was there so I had to find a way to add something TVD. So I decided to go with eight glittery, blinged out nails and two Ian accent nails. For the main design I went with a charcoal gel polish, Gelish Midnight Caller with silver glitter pressed into it. I then painted a black leopard print using my Jet Black Instant Artist paint, to finish them off I glued on an assortment of three different sized crystals all in different color schemes. The ian accent nails were done like all my other DIY decals, I printed the picture on decal paper, cut it to size and applied it to the nails, there is more info under waterslide decals

These nails are very suitable for me, They are a combo of my four favorite things I could put on my nails; glitter, crystals, animal print and those smoldery blue eyes

As promised here is the picture... I love how it turned out and just in case you were wondering he is even more wonderful in real life. Most of the actors were good sports and did the photo ops with all their crazy fans, but you could tell Ian really enjoyed it. He was just so sweet and DAMN this man is hot!!! too sexy for words...I got to be near him on two different occasions, one for the photos and the second time was for the autograph, both times I was a star struck fool. One glimpse into his eyes and I was speechless.

Blue Bells Ring

Today's post, for my second Swatch'n Saturday is China Glaze's Blue Bells Ring. This polish is hands down my favourite Blue polish and I have quite the collection. Being from Vancouver I am constantly on the hunt for the perfect Canucks blue, so over the years I have accumulated quite a few. I had a mix emotion of pride and guilt the other day when I used my new China Glaze app to colour match my jersey, I actually owned all 18 suggestions.

The reason why I chose this beautiful metallic cobalt blue is because tonight was Earth Hour and I thought the colour would make the perfect base for a earth themed mani. My Earth Hour was pretty uneventful, after a busy day at the salon and a dark apartment I was out for the count, I fell asleep by 8:35.

This design is super simple and the combo of metallic polishes looks great together. I started with my Blue Bells Ring Base, then using my small dotting tool and my darker green polish I added in random earth like shapes over the nails. Then with a softer golden green I added some minor detail to the center of the green I previously painted. The two shades I used are from China Glaze's Bohemian Collection. The darker colour is Unpredictable and the other is Rare and Radient both stunning shades. To finish off the design I used my Black instant Artist paint ant outlined the cuticle area, this created a more rounded earth like shape on the nail.

I love this design, it is a combo of two of things I'm most passionate about, which are preserving our earth and nail art. I hope you like them as much as I do!

Four Leaf Clover

Today I am starting a new feature on my blog called Swatch'n Saturdays. Where every Saturday I will feature one of my favorite polishes and I will show the color on its own and also with some simple nail art. For my first Polish I chose China Glaze's Four Leaf Clover. I thought it would be very suitable with St Patricks Day tomorrow.

I discovered this shade last summer and I fell in love! The polish is a really nice bright cream, however the name is slightly confusing. To me this color is a definite teal not really green, when I think of four leaf clovers I picture something completely different. But either way I'm loving it, I wear tons of teals and turquoise so this polish is a great match for me.

For today's art I painted a rainbow and clovers using Orly Instant Artist paints at the end of the rainbow on my thumb I added some gold studs. There is one major tip if you are using this polish, sometimes it turns the nail art yellow after too coat is applied. To stop this I I do 1 coat of either base or top coat before doing any hand painted nail art.

Vacation French

These nails are a new acrylic set done on my cousin who is headed to Mexico...with all this rain, I'm quite jealous! This design may look familiar to some of you, last year I posted a something very similar, that design was done with a multi colored polish and different cocktails. To make the design a little more wearable we went with a blue french with some cocktails and then I added some tropical flowers as well.

The french was done using a loose blue glitter inlaid into the acrylic and the deign is painted with an assortment of acrylic paints and Orly Instant Artist paints

Glitter Heart French

Happy Valentines Day everyone! I hope you all are enjoying it as much as I do! What can I say, I'm a big sucker for the day. I just love seeing all the balloons, teddy bears and flowers everywhere you go, and who can resist all the heart shaped treats. I know I've definitely passed my calorie intake for the day, starting with the cupcake for breakfast. Tonight I do not have super exciting plans, we are staying in and I've decided to cook a nice dinner, but even though I am not going out, I definitely had to have some fun nails for the occasion.

I am still wearing the pointy nails, so I saw the perfect opportunity to do this design. I wanted to wear a sparkly french in the shape of a heart. I have this loose pink glitter that I am in love with and I knew it would be perfect. I started with a coat OPI Bubble Bath to have a nice base colour, I waited for this to dry before I continued. Next using a pink polish similar in colour to the glitter I painted a heart on the tip of each nail. With my finger I pressed the glitter into the nail, filling each heart entirely. Once this was done I outlined each heart with my Jet Black Instant Artist paint. To finish the design I went along the top of each heart (what would be the smile line) with my platinum striping paint, this made the heart pop a little bit more.

This design is really quite simple but also very bold. I like it!

Mardi Gras

For today's post I just had to do a set of Mardi Gras nails. During my blog project last year I was so caught up in valentines nails and I completely missed the chance to do this design.

Mardi Gras makes me think of bright colors, sequins and of course the Mardi Gras beads. So when I started this design I was so excited to pull out all my glitters and crystals to start creating. I started with a solid black base, China Glaze Liquid Leather. While the polish was still wet I pressed the glitters into the polish. On the thumb I used ultra fine purple glitter and on the index, middle and pinky I used a large hexagon glitter in a purple and turquoise color. I wanted strings of beads over the one accent nail, so on the ring finger I used three colors and sizes of crystals and created this effect. To finish the design I used my instant artist paints to paint in the Mardi Gras mask and add the gold swirls on the three nails. To add a little definition to the swirls, I outlined them with a couple of Stripe Rite glitter
Paints in a blue and purple shade (the label rubbed off so unfortunately I can't give you the names) and then top it off by painting in the words Mardi Gras.

I am pretty happy with the outcome of these nails, it is a little tricky to take a picture with so much glitter and crystals, but for this much sparkle its definitely worth the struggle.

Sparkle Fade and simple Filligree

Today's design was done on a client, she was going in vacation and wanted something a little fancier than usual. I came up with this design and could not be happier with the outcome

This is a very simple design with a big impact. I started with Gelish Forever Beauty, but any neutral pink shimmer will do. I cured the polish then pressed loose sparkles into the nail fading blue at the tip into pink. My local nail supplier sells these amazing glitter concoctions, there are numerous sizes and shapes of glitter all mixed in one little pot, everything from tiny dots, to confetti and there are even stars mixed in there. I will post a picture of the glitters below. Once the glitter was all applied I sealed it with a coat of top it off Gelish, this gives me a smooth surface to work with my nail paints. Using my Jet Black Instant Artist paint I painted in a very simple filigree design on the tips of the nails, to finish it off I glued a single purple crystal in each corner and gave it one more coat of top it off.

These nails were lots of fun and I know the client loved them so this one is definitely considered a success!!

Nets and Bows

This one is very basic and I love it, it's so simple yet feminine.  I did these nails on my girlfriend who comes in for gel polish, every few weeks. This design was her idea and I am so happy she came up with this one. I think the peachy-pink shade paired with the black is very elegant looking but also very sweet and girly.

The fish net like design painted on the majority of the nails was a little tricky, I think if I painted these again I would go with a solid line rather than a dashed one, that would make the spacing a little easier. The striping paint I used is my usual Instant Artist in Jet Black. On the remaining two nails I painted the bows and added the little silver studs, I think this definitely finished the design and made it that much cuter.

Go Nucks!

Well it happened, we finally get our hockey season! I'm happy because I just love the feel of Vancouver when hockey is on, I think we are the most die hard fans and really come together as a city to support our boys. But I'm not going to lie it's also been very nice, I have had so much extra time to complete more important things during these last few months with no hockey. I hate to say it, but I think what excites me the most about hockey starting , is that I finally get to use all this blue nail polish. Last years I went a little overboard during playoffs, I stocked up on every shade of blue close to our jerseys trying to find the perfect canucks blue. I was super pumped and found all sorts of awesome shades, but unfortunately our playoff run did not last as long as we had hoped. But now hockey is back and my polishes get there chance to shine!

I painted my nails for this design using my favorite blue polish Splish Splash by China Glaze, its a fantastic shade! The design is pretty basic, I went with crystals in our teams colors on the thumb. The logo was painted with acrylic paint and for the middle finger I dipped it in blue sparkles and wrote Go Nucks with my white instant artist paint. With the remaining two fingers I did a silver gradient from the cuticle, this look seems to be really popular right now and I think it worked perfectly for the design.

YVR

What a crazy month it has been, January is suppost to be my slow month but I have been super busy. It seems like almost all of my clients are off to wonderful warm destinations and need to get in to get their nails and toes looking great for their vacation. After weeks of hearing about these holidays, I'm feeling the need more than ever to get away. I have booked a little vacation in April, but that seems a lot further than it actually is. With all this talk of travel, I felt inspired to do an airport themed nail design. In Vancouver we happen to have a great airport, In my (possibly biased) opinion, its the nicest one I've been in.

The logo for YVR is pretty simple. I painted the three letters over the middle fingers, with the color scheme I totally lucked out and had the perfect shades of polish needed. On the two remaining nails I wasn't too sure what I wanted to paint, I liked the look of the solid color paired with the white design. I continued this look onto the pinky nail with the airplane, but for the thumb, I thought I had a wonderful idea...I painted the outside section of the airport. After spending quite some time on the thumb, I finally finished it and absolutely hated it. I took a quick photo and removed it right away. As much as I dislike it, I've posted it below for your reference. In the end I decided to stick with the same theme as the other nails and I painted some items associated with travel.
